Grace Valley Christian Academy takes science seriously! And what could be more serious than open-heart surgery? On Monday, September 22, fifteen fourth-graders at GVCA spent two hours watching, and then performing a lamb heart dissection under the enthusiastic guidance of UC Davis Medical Center’s Chief of Transplant Surgery, Dr. Richard Perez. This is how science was meant to be taught: Lots of great questions, oohs and aahs, and most-importantly, hands-on learning! By the end of the class, at least five of the students were convinced that a career in medicine is for them.
Fourth grader, Christopher Park shared about his experience:
“I really enjoyed dissecting with Dr. Perez. My favorite part was cutting, and putting my finger in a lamb’s heart. When I put a finger in the aorta, the biggest artery, it suddenly tightened and was very cold.”
A picture truly is worth a thousand words – check out some of the pictures from the science lab and share the wonder of learning!
Families interested in finding out more about Grace Valley Christian Academy are invited to the school’s monthly chapel service and open house on Friday, November 7.
