Organization of Grace Valley Volleyball Club

Grace Valley Volleyball Club is a ministry of Grace Valley Christian Center, a church located in Davis, California.  The church has final authority in all decisions and policies pertaining to the volleyball club.

GVVC participates in the tournament season organized by the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA).  For 2007, GVVC teams will participate in NCVA Area League and NCVA Non-League tournaments.  We may also play in scrimmages against other clubs’ teams.

GVVC Staff, overview

Generally, staff of Grace Valley Volleyball Club are unpaid volunteers.  So, it may be argued that the term “staff” is perhaps a misnomer.  Nevertheless, there are certain duties that must be accomplished by the director, coaches, and other volunteers in order for the club to function, as well as meet requirements imposed by the Northern California Volleyball Association for a club team.  Here are the staff classifications and general duties required:

The Club Director is required to oversee the entire volleyball program.  Included in the Director's duties are listed below.  Several, if not all, of these duties are performed with the assistance of the coaching staff:

1) Timely submission of all paperwork to the NCVA

2) Scheduling of tournaments, scrimmages, and practice times

3) Collection of fees

4) Enforcement of club policies and missions

5) Selection of coaches and other volunteer staff

6) Other duties as required (including complaints, inquiries, publicity, policy revisions, etc.)

Coaches are responsible for:

1) Training and instructing the players in the sport of volleyball

2) Development of team strategy

3) Planning and directing practices

4) Enforcing club policies and missions

5) Addressing any player behavior issues at practices or matches

6) Keeping parents apprised of their daughters’ progress

7) Other duties as required

Team Moms are volunteer parents who plan to attend each tournament, for the whole day.  Each team has one Team Mom.  The Team Mom pre-arranges rides to the tournament site, and assists the coaches and players as needed, such as in the case of players’ injuries, health issues, or emotional issues, if the players’ parents are not present.

The Food Group is a mandatory program that provides food at the tournaments for each participating player.  The Food Group Reps make sure that participating players have food available for them throughout the day.  The costs of the food are included in the VB Club fees for each player.  These costs are collected whether or not the player takes advantage of the available food.  The amount of food will be enough to cover lunch, as well as snacks and drinks throughout the day.  Dinner is NOT included.  If a tournament is more than an hour away, parents should provide the coach or team mom with money to cover their daughter’s dinner expenses after the tournament.

GVVC Staff; Club Director and Coaches:

Club Director.   Gary McHolland, along with his wife Kimberly, was instrumental in forming GVVC in 2002.  He has coached or assisted with both club and school volleyball teams, both girls and boys.  He currently is the head coach for the 8th grade boys team and High School Freshman boys team (i.e. 9th grade team) at Grace Valley Christian Academy.

Coaches

The coaches’ team assignments will be made after we determine how many teams we will have this season.  Here are our coaches from last season.

Brittany Klein.  Ms. Klein has played volleyball in high school and club, including starting for the Davis HS team that placed 3rd in the state a few years ago.  Ms. Klein has also served as the team manager for the UCD women’s VB team.  She has coached and assisted with both club and school teams.  Her experience as a player, assistant, and coach, makes Ms. Klein a valuable asset to GVVC.

Kimberly McHolland.  Mrs. McHolland, along with her husband Gary, was instrumental in forming GVVC in 2002.  Kim has acted as head coach or assistant coach for all age levels, in every GVVC club season.  She has coached the Grace Valley Christian Academy 7th/8th grade volleyball teams to two consecutive Parochial Athletic League championships (35 teams in the P.A.L. throughout Sacramento, Yolo, and Placer counties).  She also has coached the G.V.C.A. 9th grade teams to consecutive championships of the NorCal Freshman league, against mostly Division 1 High School freshman teams.

Eric Dyer.  Mr. Dyer has been very involved in the volleyball club since it formed, as he his three daughters have actively participated in GVVC.  In addition to the 12 & under club teams, he has coached the 5th/6th grade team at Grace Valley Christian Academy to three playoff appearances and one championship in the 30-team Parochial Athletic League.
